Kieran Hebden of Four Tet and Steve Reid
Dear Citzens,
How's it going?
Kieran Hebden of Four Tet and Steve Reid weave a sonic tapestry of rhythm and electronic threads. Brought together by an English music Promoter as musical experiment, these two had such a great time, they just stayed playing together and now are on tour.
It was really great to see all you sophisticated cats out to see this very unusual Monday show. Although we could have fit more of you, the room was nicely full for this dynamic duo. It was a pleasure to host these musical giants, and I hope to see them again someday.
Remember this blurb from the Broken City Social Club Writing Collective? It is all true:
Musical history comes crashing down in a monumental swell with Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden and legendary jazz drummer Steve Reid.
Broken City audiences may be more familiar with the name Kieran Hebden; the man behind folktronica group Four Tet, the post rock collective Fridge and the much sought after remix master for Radiohead, Bloc Party, Aphex Twin, Bonobo and Madvillain.
His latest collaboration is possibly his most mind blowing and though most may not know his name, drummer Steve Reid is the closest Calgary may ever come to James Brown again. Having gotten his start in 1964 at the age of nineteen playing drums for Martha Reeves & the Vandellas' on 'Dancing In The Street', Reid laid down an amazing career with numerous Motown sessions and lengthy tenures with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and James Brown.
Context aside, the night will likely be nothing Broken City has ever seen or heard. A little backbeat, a little downbeat all wrapped up in a mind melting free jazz odyssey.- There will be a $20.00 cover for this event.
Thank you Steve Fletcher, KLM for setting us up with the drum kit with the jazz cymbals.
Please have a Skookum day.
Peace,
John Huh
